A 3-day seminar on the Portage methodology was held in Moscow as part of the project: TOGETHER IT WILL BE POSSIBLE: comprehensive support for children with severe and multiple developmental disabilities and their families.
‼The project is implemented with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund.
The idea of the project “TOGETHER IT WILL WORK” is to provide comprehensive assistance to children with severe and multiple developmental disorders (hereinafter referred to as TMND) by increasing parental competencies and involving the parents of children in the process of habilitation and teaching children vital skills using the Portage method.
The “Portage” system lowers barriers to disability, promotes the integration of children with TMND, allows the development of cognition, self-service, movement, speech and socialization skills in supposedly “hopeless” children. Against the backdrop of an increase in the number of children with disabilities, a lack of qualified professionals and tools to work with such children, Portage, as a practice with proven effectiveness, is a simple and effective solution for a child, parent, family, specialist, institution and the social protection system as a whole.
For the first time in Russia, parents and children with TMND aged 3 to 18 from Moscow, Mozhaisk, Kazan, Nizhnekamsk, Rostov-on-Don, Khabarovsk will receive Portage assistance. Usually, classes with children with TMND are conducted by specialized specialists. Parents themselves cannot teach a child to hold a spoon, dress, chew food, etc. The uniqueness of the project is that with the help of specialists, the parent will conduct classes with the child at home. On the basis of participating organizations, Portage teams will be formed from the staff of employees who will be trained and will be able to apply the methodology both directly dealing with the child and accompanying the parent.
And today’s seminar is the first of four presidential grants planned with the support of the Foundation.
Within 3 days, 41 specialists from the territorial departments of the City Psychological and Pedagogical Center of Moscow, the Center for Social Assistance and Rehabilitation “Seven I”, Moscow and ANO Regional Center ” Kind heart”.
As a result of the seminar, 5 new Portage pilot teams were formed in the Central Federal District. More than 60 children and 60 parents in Moscow and Mozhaisk will receive long-term assistance and support from specialists for 8 months. Parents of children with severe and multiple developmental disabilities will be able to improve their parental competencies, and the children will be diagnosed and given the opportunity to develop vital skills using a unique methodology.
