Dear reader,

We sincerely thank you for your support with our project ‘Global Giving’ – together with you in 2016, we continued to improve the lives of children with severe mental and physical development! We would gladly like to share with you the results of this year.

2 1

We conducted eleven training dog-therapy sessions with twenty five children from the Centre to promote family education and qualities like faith and love in Moscow. These children have severe multiple disabilities – mental retardation, cerebral palsy, speech underdevelopment, visual and hearing impairment,  etc.

We have worked with them for three years where there are visible positive changes:

• Children feel better about their bodies,
• Reduced stiffness
• Improving coordination,
• Helps the emotional state,
• Increased speech and other communication skills
• Overcome phobias,
• Developing cognitive activity,
• Become more self-reliant

We continued to work on the verticalization of eighteen children with severe disabilities living in an Elatma`s orphanage. Every day in the orphanage two assistants are engaged with an individual child – they dress and apply orthopaedic devices, motivate the child to walk etc.

Twice, we came with orthopedists from Moscow to examine all the children involved in the project and to evaluate what needed changes – who needed new orthopaedic devices, who needed treatment in Moscow, and looked for new children who were in need of verticalization.

As a result, thirteen children in 2016 have been treated at the clinic of the Federal Bureau of Medical and Social Expertise in Moscow. Each child had an individual examination and treatment program (drug therapy, electrical stimulation, magnetic therapy, acupuncture, massage, physical therapy, etc.). Two children this year have had an operations on their legs – they moved very well, and doctors predict their further development will be smooth.

All the children through comprehensive work on verticalization now convey positive results in the development of:

• All children have learned to stand by themselves,
• Go completely on their own or with the support of the hands or with a walker,
• Strengthen the muscles of the whole body, especially the neck, back and legs,
• Children continue to grow in height and gain weight
• Become more attentive, sociable, and smiling, showing more interest in the world around them,
• Develop intellectually,
• One girl was revaluated on her diagnosis of deafness – after the beginning of verticalization she began to hear
• Improve the process of eating, and other vital functions,
• All became more independent and mobile, moving more and with confidence, making it easier to care for children and enhance their development,
• As a result of these changes, there will be a smoother integration of the children into society

We continued to fund sessions on the “Portage” method in Elatma`s orphanage from May to November – where five experts held 2664 sessions with eighteen children.

Thanks to these studies about the Portage method, it has led to development of skills among the children in areas of motion, self-service, knowledge, language and socialization. Multiple children have already learned:

• How to wash, dress, comb,
• Eat and drink,
• Crawl, lie on their stomach, sit, roll over, stand or walk,
• Collect designs and puzzles, stringing beads, paint, cut, make applications, distinguish between colours, know animals and learn different things, consider looking at books
• Match sounds to objects and development of speech
• Communicate and play with each other as well as with adults, to get acquainted with the outside world – they come out of their rooms, they began to walk on the street, etc.

Moreover, some children obtained skills without the help of an adult – and in fact all of these children were bedridden and were considered “futile”! Yet as our results shows – even children with very severe impairments have potential to develop and their quality of life can be significantly improved!

We cordially thank you for your support of our children – without you, their development would not be possible! We wish you health, happiness and prosperity in the New Year! Stay tuned, please continue making donations and telling your friends about us, for it gives our children an opportunity to develop – the best gift of all!
